Surfing-themed vacations are becoming an increasingly popular vacation option, particularly in Costa Rica, and you may be asking yourself — why would, or should, I choose this Bodhi place?
Below you will find some highlights of differentiators that have been repeated, mentioned, or alluded to by our past guests — and if you’d like to see what our past guests have to say about us, please head to our Testimonials page or the Bodhi Surf TripAdvisor page.
A noticeable trend with surf camps, or surf resorts, is that they tend to isolate themselves from their locale. While this has its own appeal, at Bodhi Surf School we strive to bridge the gap between our community and our guests — we want our guests to experience and engage in the community of Bahia Ballena as much as possible. For that reason, we have our Community Walking Tour, a fun jaunt around Bahia Ballena with trained guides who discuss the local history, culture, economy, and environment. We shy away from providing an “all-inclusive” environment for our guests as we want them to go out and explore, allowing all their senses to be engaged by our coastal community.
2% of the income received by Bodhi Surf from your Bodhi Sessions or other surf and yoga vacation package is reinvested into our community through our Travelers’ Philanthropy Program, ensuring that we are giving back and contributing to the improvement of this special place which we call home. These funds go to three organizations that we believe are consequential in the wellbeing of our town: Geoporter, a GPS/GIS technology education non-profit; ASANA, a local conservation organization working along Costa Rica’s central and southern Pacific coast ; and Forjando Alas, an after school educational program for the community’s youth.
Surf in a Marine Protected Area
Playa Colonia is the beach where Bodhi Surf holds its surf lessons. Aside from the beach consisting of a number of factors that make it a beginner-friendly surf break for newbie surfers, Playa Colonia sits within the Marino Ballena National Park – Costa Rica’s first marine National Park! So not only will you get to enjoy the temperate and tropical waters of Costa Rica’s South Pacific, you also have the added benefit of being in a place where marine protection is a topmost priority, meaning you will enjoy clean waters and perhaps even see an ocean animal or two!
Committed Ocean Guardians
We need the ocean for work, life, and play, and therefore we take concrete actions to promote Ocean Guardianship. Too often there is a disconnect between the actions and principles of individuals that comprise an organization and those of the organization itself. At Bodhi Surf, our commitment to being Ocean Guardians starts with the individuals that make-up the organization and permeates through the company as a whole. Read all about our individual journeys and collective company journey to reduce our environmental impact and support our community’s flourishment on the Bodhi Surf blog.
Small Groups, Personalized Service
Our company believes in the saying “small is beautiful”, and we take great care and pride in providing a personalized and intimate experience at Bodhi Surf. Our surf and yoga lodge can host a maximum of 12 people, and we maintain small groups for both our surf lessons and yoga classes to ensure that each participant is receiving the attention and instruction he or she requires. On top of that, we — the business owners — will be the ones who put your trip together, answer any pre-trip questions you may have, host you at the Bodhi Lodge once you are here, and be your surf and yoga instructors.
Bodhi Surf vacation guests benefit from pre-arrival travel planning, as well as from in-country travel support. In the event that you have a mishap along your Costa Rican adventure you can rest assured that we are there to provide support and solutions to get you back on track and enjoying your vacation. In addition, if you are happy with your experience at Bodhi Surf School, we are happy to connect you with other businesses and organizations who share similar visions!
