Why I’m an Ocean Guardian: The Most Powerful Inspiration

Surfing in France

I could probably write a book about how my love for the ocean came to me, and how my heart feels fulfilled every time I am in touch with it. First of all, in my childhood, I didn’t live anywhere near the ocean. But every year for a few years in a row, my parents took me and my brother for a week of holidays at the beach. There were no waves, nor warm water, and it was the North Sea but still — even if my memories are vague (which by the way is the French for “wave” — see, everything’s related) I … [Read more...]

How To: Choose an Ideal Bathing Suit for Surfing

Example of bad surf bikini

Here at Bodhi Surf School, we primarily get ladies who come to stay with us for surf (and sometimes also yoga) vacations. Why? Perhaps it's because there are more women than men on the planet. Or maybe because women are more likely to plan and execute a girls trip than men. Or, it could be that men are just more likely to teach themselves to surf rather than get lessons. Whatever the reason behind this phenomenon, there is one burning question that ladies ask me time and time again: what kind of … [Read more...]

What Being A Surf Instructor Means To Me

How could I not love my job?

I have the great fortune of being a surf school co-owner and instructor, so it is literally my job to get people stoked. That, and of course, actually teaching them how to surf. Now, for the lesson part, like any other job, I have the option of just “going through the motions”, of taking those steps that one memorizes after so many times of doing something. However, the reason that I don’t do that is because I love my job. Granted, even on those days where I don’t feel like giving a lesson, … [Read more...]

Thoughts About Shark Attacks & Surfing

It is obviously a very tragic event, the victim’s family is surely grieving for having lost a loved one, as anyone would be in their situation. Our daily schedule for those two weeks went something like this: … [Read more...]

Are Dolphins a Surfer’s Best Friend?

Dolphin jumping

Many surfers without a doubt will say that their best friend in the water or favorite aquatic animal is the dolphin. Time and time again I have heard from my “surfer” friends, acquaintances, and co-workers that the dolphin is a surfer's best friend. With a simple Google search for the keywords “ are dolphins a surfers best friend” I found the words of one of the worlds most progressive surfers, Laird Hamilton, to be supportive of the claim that dolphins are surfers best friends. Laird says, … [Read more...]
