Adrianne Chandra-Huff
Adrianne is the youthfulness of Bodhi Surf. She’s the one that keeps things light-hearted and the instigator of fun. Though she is the youngest of the four founders, her ability to analyze, objectively critique, and effectively communicate is well beyond her years. When the rest of us are blinded by our emotions, Adrianne is there to make sure we do the right thing.
Her strong writing skills and interest in journalism have self-nominated her to serve as Bodhi Surf’s content writer/editor and principal blogger. So if you happen to find any grammatical errors please email her immediately!
If you enjoy dancing you will be happy to know that Adrianne does so as well, and as a certified Zumba instructor she will be leading all our Zumba activities.
NOTE: Zumba packages are currently under development and will be offered in the Fall of 2011.
Background
Adrianne was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada but grew up just a few hours from there in Kamloops. From a young age, Adrianne was shaped by travel. At the age of twelve, Adrianne and her family embarked on an eight-month journey in a converted, live-in, dark brown 1976 school bus named “Buster”. On the trip they traversed the United States and visited much of Mexico.
This trip was a beginning and an end; the beginning of her addiction to travel and the end of innocence, as the experience opened her eyes to the realities of how most of the world’s people actually live. After returning home, she was convinced that she would go back and see the rest of Mexico.
Her conviction led her to return to Mexico on numerous occasions during her high school years and for a six-month backpacking adventure following her graduation. On this last trip she met her future husband, Gibran, which influenced her to move to California and attend the University of California, San Diego where she studied International Studies and Political Science.
Adrianne’s education and extensive travel experience fostered a growing interest in human rights, social justice, and international development. Her participation in the UCSD Amnesty International chapter further cemented her interest in these topics, driving her to pursue a career in writing and travel journalism.
Work Experience
Adrianne has worked from a young age. Whether it was serving customers at a bakery, working in the hospitality industry, or as a part-time babysitter, she has approached each with a high sense of responsibility.
In 2008 Adrianne served as a guide and surf instructor for Rustic Pathways’ Service n’ Surf program during which she led community service activities and helped teenagers learn how to surf. Though at the time she was only a couple years older than some of the kids on the program, she gained their respect with her easy-going nature and ability to communicate.
On top of the fun-loving nature of Adrianne, it is these group management and communication skills that make her an important part of providing the best possible experience for our guests.
Surfing Experience
Having grown up in the mountains, Adrianne first experienced the beach life while on her family’s eight-month road trip through Mexico. Though at the time she was intrigued by the thought of riding waves it wasn’t until she met Gibran that she was forced to start surfing. And fortunately for Gibran, she has also fallen in love with surfing.
While most of Adrianne’s surf sessions have taken place in California, she’s had the fortune of surfing some prime surf breaks such as Avellanas in Costa Rica, and San Blas, Punta de Mita, and Shipwrecks in Mexico.
Relaxing
In her free time Adrianne enjoys reading multiple books, having a cup of tea with friends, and a good meal. A few fun (and interesting) facts about Adrianne:
- Most-listened to album of all time: Clandestino by Manu Chao.
- Favorite unhealthy foods: Sour gummy worms, baklava, Takis.
- Favorite book: So many to choose from… but probably Kingdom of Fear by Hunter S. Thompson because it has it all – comedy, tragedy, suspense, and, best of all, it deals with important issues in a very apt and Gonzo-esque way.
- Favorite surf attire: One-piece swim suit… so convenient!
- Favorite way to travel: Bus it.
