Established in 1986, Etnies describes itself as a “global action sports footwear and apparel” company, and it also sponsors a team of skateboarders, snowboarders, surfers, BMXers, and motocross racers. In 2007, the company’s president, Pierre Andre Senizergues, met with government officials in Costa Rica and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Costa Rica had pledged to to be carbon neutral by 2021, one of the first developing countries to do so. Senizergues felt an increased affinity to the country as he also had the intention of making Etnies a carbon neutral company by the year 2020. (more…)

Why Surfers Are So Environmentally-Conscious

Surfers have long been known for their “alternative” lifestyles. Through the years, they have been stereotyped as pot-smoking hippies who are constantly seeking thrills and cannot hold down a job (think of Fast Times at Ridgemont High’s character, Jeff Spicoli). While this typecast seems to have faded quite a bit over the years, surfers have maintained an environmental-activist image.

Last year, a documentary called The Cove came out, and it highlighted the dolphin slaughter that takes place annually in Taiji, Japan. This important film was able to bring attention to the horrendous practice that occurs not just in Japan, but also countries such as Denmark, the Solomon Islands, Taiwan, and Peru. (more…)
Marine Tourism Best Practices in Costa Rica

Approximately three years ago the KETO Foundation, an organization with a focus on the study of biology, management and conservation of marine and coastal resources, started biological monitoring and impact studies in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. Following the results of their field observations and scientific investigations they decided to develop many projects, one of which is a current project to improve the operations of boat tour operators located in Bahia Ballena, Costa Rica.
