Once, I heard from a teacher, a beautiful and wise phrase, “The real Yoga begins off the Mat”. And it was one of those phrases that can really change your perspective on your daily yoga practice.
We get into our mats and stretch, reenergize, liberate some toxins, try a few challenging poses and meditate. All of this with the intention not only to connect with our bodies in a deeper level, but getting to know our bodies and finding our “edge” which means that in every asana we practice we discover that limit between finding the space where we are challenging ourselves without pushing so hard where we can end up hurting ourselves. That’s when the sutra of Patanjali “Sthira Sukhan asanam” which means – finding strength and comfort at the same time in the pose – applies, and right there, we find balance. At the end of the practice hopefully we relieve tension and find that inner peace we are looking for. Continue reading “Yoga Off The Mat”

The First Endless Summer Movie
In 1966 a movie called The Endless Summer did just that. The film follows two surfers around the globe as they keep up with the Summer season, seeking some of the best waves around the world. The film was a defining moment for surfing as well as for surf movies. Continue reading “The Endless Summer(s) Surf Movies”

One thing that really surprised me the first time that I visited Costa Rica was the level of friendliness exhibited by Ticos. It’s not that I had expected them to be unfriendly — Latin America is notorious for its friendly and happy people — but Costa Ricans were especially kind and helpful. It’s almost as though their attitude were contagious, and quite frankly, it was something that contributed positively to my time there. People often wonder whether they should take a private surf lesson or a group lesson. Typically there is not much difference between the two. A surf school will teach their private lessons pretty much in the same way they teach a group lesson. The real difference among surf schools is in the student to instructor ratio of those group lessons. This ratio plays a major role in determining whether or not a student receives the assistance or attention from a surf instructor that is required to ensure the student’s safety and development as a surfer.
