Surf Lessons for Thinking Beyond Borders

September 23rd, 2010 Travis

Group surf lesson in UvitaIt’s not everyday you get to teach surf lessons to a group of students who are preparing for an 8 month journey around the world, but on September 11, 2010 Bodhi Surf School was doing just that; group surf lessons on Uvita beach inside the Marino Ballena National Park with students from Thinking Beyond Borders. The surf lessons started in the early afternoon at Playa Uvita. Conditions were nice with cloudy skies and soft waves rolling through on the dropping tide. The surf lesson started with me providing a breakdown of surf safety and security. Later, the group lined up along the shoreline and learned techniques for popping up and getting in a surfing stance. Afterwards, the group was divided to maintain a low student to instructor ratio and ensure quality surf instruction. Finally the groups hit the surf for some excellent Costa Rica surfing. The lessons were so successful that the group rented surfboards for the whole week in order to “Awaken their inner surfer”. Continue reading “Surf Lessons for Thinking Beyond Borders”

September 23rd, 2010 Travis

Uvita beach clean up The community of Bahia Ballena and Uvita hosted the II Annual Whale Festival of 2010.  The event, which started on September 4th brought Costa Ricans, residents, and foreign visitors together to observe the majestic humpback whales that come to visit the warm and calm waters of the Marino Ballena National Park.  Aside from taking a boat tour to observe whales, dolphins and turtles, the festival offered visitors an opportunity eat local foods, partake in typical Costa Rican dances, learn about different non-profit programs and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Uvita. Experienced surfers come from around the world in search of those epic surf sessions made famous by surf flicks such as The Endless Summer 2. Meanwhile, beginners come on surfing vacations looking to improve their ability, and tourists commonly find themselves taking their first, perhaps unplanned, surf lesson in the land of Pura Vida. Grupo SURF Event: Presented by OTL & Bodhi Surf School

July 17th, 2010 Bodhi Surf

For us in San Diego, this summer has not kept up with it’s reputation of sunshine and warm temperatures. The dreary weather has actually broken records as one of the coldest summers on San Diego record.

No Surf, No Problem

That doesn’t mean we haven’t been having fun though! On June 22, 2010 Bodhi Surf School helped put on an Outside the Lens event to benefit the Costa Rica Grupo SURF project, a youth program that works with local kids in Bahi Ballena and Uvita, Costa Rica to promote environmental conservation, community awareness, and technology education. The proceeds went to buy cameras for the Grupo SURF project.
